A Western Classic

Groups Today readers have once again chosen the Grand Canyon as a top attraction in the Western region.

Vast, magnificent and inarguably beautiful, the Grand Canyon is easily Arizona's most distinguishable landmark—a natural wonder that simply must be seen to be believed. Stretching 277 miles from end to end, steep rocky walls descend more than a mile to the canyon's floor, where the wild Colorado River traces a swift course southwest. The South Rim, near Flagstaff and Williams, offers the most services in terms of lodging, restaurants and a free shuttle bus to the park. The North Rim, which is inaccessible during winter months, provides a more rustic experience, and the West Rim offers views of the canyon via the Skywalk, from 4,000 feet up. The Canyon's western edge, home to beautiful Havasupai Falls and the town of Supai, is also accessible via roads on the Hualapai Indian Reservation. White water rafting, hiking and tours by bike, mule, jeep and air are all options for exploration. Lodging ranges from rustic lodges to upscale inns. Local shops offer camping supplies, Native American handicrafts, and specimens of interest to budding geologists.
