Your Group’s Connection to the Past

Every destination has a story made up of people, places and feelings. Maryland is steeped in rich history, and the Deep Creek area tucked away in the mountains of western Maryland is no exception.

Today, guests could connect to our past by visiting our Heritage Area. The Mountain Maryland Gateway to the West Heritage Area, one of 13 heritage areas in the state, features distinct historic attractions, traditions and natural landscapes connected by roads, trails and other means.

Groups could take a step back in time and visit one of our many museums exploring local history, a restored B&O train station and a transportation museum. Transportation has played a major role in our region. The National Road runs through the northern part of our county, and leisure travel in Garrett County dates back to the late 1800s, when the railroads were established in the region and visitors wishing to escape the summer heat of the city traveled by train to the area, staying in lavish hotels. Find evidence of these hotels by visiting a beautiful façade in downtown Oakland, or by sitting in the restored gazebo from the historic Deer Park Hotel.

Or visit, Casselman River Bridge, a National Historic Landmark, where groups could literally take a step back in time. Once the largest single-span arch bridge, the Casselman River Bridge remains open today—for foot traffic.

Just across the bridge, guests will find the Spruce Forest Artisan Village, complete with historic buildings that house resident and guest artists in season. Groups could visit with the local bird carver and learn about how he became a master of his craft—and "throwing a pot" takes on a new meaning when watching the potter carefully craft beautiful cooking, dining and decorative pottery.

Connecting through history, stories and the people makes for long-lasting memories—and we invite your groups to experience theirs in the Deep Creek Area of western Maryland.
