Let's Scallop!

Scalloping: part snorkel, part treasure dive, part fishing. Scalloping season began June 25 and runs through September 24 this year at the Plantation on Crystal River.

The Plantation on Crystal River, a hidden gem on Florida's Nature Coast, offers guided scalloping deals. The package includes a two-night stay in a garden- or water-view deluxe room, patio room or golf villa; a guided scalloping tour with one of the area's top captains; a souvenir bag with scallop recipes; and a meal prepared from the day's fresh harvest.

In addition to scalloping adventures, the Plantation on Crystal River offers myriad activities for groups: sunset cruises, trips to Homosassa Springs State Wildlife Park, and swimming or snorkeling with Florida manatees. Even in the summer, there could be as many as 50 to 70 manatees in the bay.

Boats are also available for groups to rent. The Plantation on Crystal River Adventure Center has pontoon boats, Jon boats, canoes and kayaks, so visitors can easily explore the 600 acres of King's Bay water. The area also offers great opportunities for both freshwater and saltwater fishing.

Rates for scalloping start at $615 for guided mid-week stays for two guests. Nonguided scalloping deals are also available, with rates starting at $335.
